Many campsites in Italy are located between imposing mountains, lakes or on the coast. You can enjoy culture, food and drink, both on and around the campsite. The famous lakes in the north of Italy, including Lake Garda and Lago di Maggiore, are tourist attractions.

The camping holiday is an adventure in itself when you stay at a campsite in regions such as Tuscany and Umbria. At Italian campsites on the Adriatic coast it is wonderful to sunbathe and relax on the long beaches. The islands of Elba, Sardinia and Sicily are also part of the Italian Republic, and are becoming increasingly popular areas for camping holidays.

When it gets too hot for the tent or caravan and you want to take a refreshing dip in the cooling pool at the campsite, don't forget to put on a swimming cap: this is mandatory in swimming pools in Italy at some campsites!

Visit world cities from the campsites in Italy

The country is divided into 20 so-called 'regions' (including Tuscany, Umbria, Le Marche, Piemonte). Important major cities that are definitely worth visiting are Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Florence. No shortage of art! The smallest independent state in the world 'Vatican City', the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, is also worth a visit. Vatican City and many large cities can often be easily reached by train from the train station in the vicinity of the campsites in Italy.

Gastronomy

Pizza, pasta or a delicious gelato? Italian cuisine is rich and known all over the world. Did you know that the pizza Margherita is named after former Italian Queen Margaretha? And have you ever noticed that the pizza has the national tricolor? The ingredients mozzarella, basil and tomato mimic the Italian flag.

But Italy has more to offer than pizza. In the afternoon, have a bruchetta with a glass of wine. This is a toasted piece of bread, smeared with garlic and drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper. There are also variations with tomato, vegetables and cheese. Ideal as a snack or before. Be gastronomically surprised by the rich Italian cuisine.

Italian wines

Italy is pre-eminently the land of wine. Wine is made in almost every region, from different types of grapes. A well-known wine is the Chianti Classico. Originally this wine comes from the area between Florence, Siena and Arezzo. In terms of area (160km), this region is larger than the French wine region of Bordeaux. But the red wines from the blue grape Montepulciano and Sangiovese from Tuscany are also widely known.

The sunny, warm and dry climate ensures that the grapes are rich in sugar. The further south you go, the warmer it gets, making the wines generally sweeter. The liqueur-like dessert wines usually come from the south. The north of Italy mainly knows the lighter, more elegant white wines.

Take a trip from the campsites in Italy to one of the many wineries. The owners can tell you everything about the wines of the region and of course let you taste them. Excursions to one of these wineries or tastings are often organized from the campsite. And don't forget to take a few good bottles of wine home with you, so that you can enjoy the wonderful camping holiday in Italy after returning home!

Holidays in Italy

Italy has a number of official holidays. One of the most important days to remember when camping in Italy is August 15, the so-called 'Ferragosto'. All of Italy is then closed and locals flock to the beaches, lakes and parks in the area. A good idea to enjoy the sun and the peace and quiet at the tent or caravan, at the campsite.

Practical information

A valid passport or European identity card is required when driving to the campsites in Italy. Motor vehicle drivers must carry a valid driver's license, registration certificate and green card. When you drive a trailer or a caravan, it is mandatory to have the corresponding papers with you. Italy is a member of the EU and has the Euro as its official currency.
