Vakanties op campings in Noord-Ierland zijn echt in opkomst. Noord-Ierland maakt deel uit van het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het land ligt echter niet op het eiland Groot-Brittanië, maar op het eiland Ierland. Het is ook het kleinste land van Groot-Brittanië en daardoor is het zeer aantrekkelijk om het land te verkennen. Belfast, de hoofdstad van Noord-Ierland

De bekendste stad is de hoofdstad Belfast, welke zeker het bezoeken waard is. Door politieke ongeregeldheden kent het land een onstuimig verleden, maar de overheid doet er alles aan de vakantieganger naar de campings in Noord-Ierland te laten afreizen. Het is inmiddels een ware topbestemming met de Titanic experience, shopmogelijkheden, musea, historisch erfgoed en activiteiten in de natuur.

Giant's Causeway

Start de reis in Belfast en volg de wegen door de negen valleien van Antrim. Je vertoeft tussen prachtige landschappen en onvergetelijke uitzichten. Het hoogtepunt van de route ligt bij de Giant´s Causeway Coast. Dat is de populairste attractie in het land. Het vulkanische gesteente heeft de kliffen langs de kust gevormd. Dit moet je gezien hebben! In de Giant’s Causeway, het enige werelderfgoed in Noord-Ierland, tref je diverse campings. Deze zeldzame rotsformatie bestaat uit zo’n 40.000 basalt-zuilen en is een toplocatie voor een unieke kampeervakantie. De wandelpaden zijn geschikt voor jong en oud en voor avonturiers en minder validen. De panorama’s van de rotsen en de kliffen zijn indrukwekkend. Zo’n 60 miljoen jaar geleden tijdens een vulkaanuitbarsting zouden deze zijn ontstaan.

 

Noord-Ierse legende: Finn McCool

Volgens de Noord-Ierse legende, heeft de Ierse reus Finn McCool een pad door de zee (causeway) naar Schotland gemaakt om te vechten met zijn schotse tegenhanger Benandonner. Eenmaal in Schotland aangekomen, bleek Benandonner nog reusachtiger dan hijzelf en dus vlucht Finn McCool weer terug. Thuisgekomen, vraagt hij zijn vrouw om hem te vermommen als baby. Op het moment dat Benandonner de reusachtige ‘baby’ in Ierland aantreft, schrikt hij van de grootte. De vader van zo’n baby zou namelijk vele male groter en sterker zijn, dan Benandonner zelf, bedenkt hij zich. In zijn vlucht terug naar Schotland, vernielt Benandonner het zeepad. Hierdoor blijven alleen het begin in Ierland en het begin in Schotland, nog over.

Mourne Mountains

In de ruige natuur van de Mourne Mountains is genoeg te doen. Het rotsgesteente en de bergrivieren zorgen voor voldoende vermaak. Denk aan wandelen, fietsen, klimmen, paardrijden. Ben je een echte waterrat? Duik dan in de rivierbedden en maak een boottrip, ga kanoën, bezoek de grotten of doe aan canyoning.
