The Baden-Württemberg region, with nearly 11 million inhabitants, is Germany's third-largest state. It is also an important tourist attraction in the southwest of the Federal Republic of Germany. You will find many medicinal baths and spas here. The mountainous and hilly landscape is ideally suited for a brisk walk, a wonderful bike ride and last but not least: a camping holiday.

Active walking, skiing and cycling holiday

The forest mountains The Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is a paradise for climbers, hikers, skiers, hang gliders and sailors. The Black Forest is one of the most picturesque and popular regions of Germany for campers, with a great diversity of natural beauty and many romantic spots. There are coniferous forests, swaying wheat fields and beautiful views of glaciers, carved valleys and gorges, waterfalls and mountain streams.

There are plenty of opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts around the Feldberg (1493 m). Do you prefer cycling? Cyclists and mountain bikers can also do their thing here. The region has a good network of cycle paths.

The best cycling routes can be found on flat or sloping terrain, such as around the lakes Bodensee, Titisee, Schluchsee or along the rivers. There are about 250 kilometers of cycling routes around Lake Constance (Bodensee). You then cycle past orchards and vineyards, castles and old villages. You can also cycle on the Schwarzwald-Radweg, Bodensee-Radweg and the Donau-Radweg.

Medicinal baths and spas

The Baden-Würrtemberg region is number one in Germany when it comes to bathing. You will find no fewer than 60 different medicinal baths and spas here. Alternate your camping holiday with a relaxing day in one of the healing baths. A must is Baden-Baden. Here you will find one of the most important spas in the area with beautiful buildings such as the Neues Schloss, the Stiftskirche and the Friedrichsbad, which was built on Roman remains.

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Lake Constance (Bodensee), on the border of Switzerland and Austria, is traditionally a very popular camping area. There are good campsites in the area, surrounded by beautiful, historic towns.

Lake Constance is a very attractive holiday destination because of its nature and cultural heritage. Summer is the best time here because of colorful fishing festivals and a multitude of water sports available. Lake Constance radiates a southern atmosphere in the summer months, which gives the stay an extra dimension.

Visit Stuttgart, Mannheim and Karlsruhe

The main cities are Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg, Heilbronn and Ulm. Each of these cities is worth a visit. The colorful capital Stuttgart (600,000 inhabitants) is located 584 kilometers from Utrecht if you choose the route via Arnhem and Cologne (Germany) to Basel, Switzerland.

Stuttgart lies between picturesque hills and is an important industrial center, including factories of the world-renowned car brands Porsche and Mercedes. It is also an important publishing and cultural center with a world-renowned ballet company, chamber orchestra and magnificent art collections, such as the Staatsgalerie. If you want to enjoy an event near your campsite, you can. Events in this area include Stuttgarter Weindorf (Aug/Sept and Oct/Nov), Fellbacher Herbst (Oct) and the Weihnachtsmarkt (Dec).

Gastronomy

Baden-Württemberg has an illustrious and turbulent past. The region was ruled by counts, (grand) dukes and kings, who played a major role in German and European history and culture. Many places evoke memories of Roman times in the distant past. The Romans grew grapes there and thus laid the foundation for the region's white wines, which are famous all over the world for their quality. It has long been the case that no renowned wine competition can be held without a winegrower from the region winning prizes.

Baden-Württemberg even more tasty snacks and drinks. What about the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (cherry pie) and the Kirschwasser Schnapps (gin). Don't feel like cooking at the campsite? Gastronomic guides such as the Guide Michelin rate a relatively large number of top-level restaurants. You can enjoy delicious German food, in the best sense of the word. In short: a paradise for gourmets who want to enjoy themselves during their holiday!
