Toen Napoleon terugkeerde van het eiland Elba overnachtte hij in de Haute-Alpes. De dorpjes en stadjes die hij toen passeerde zijn daar nog steeds erg trots op. De sporen die Napoleon op zijn tocht heeft achtergelaten zijn vooral verhalen die generaties lang worden doorgegeven. Toch is de “Route Napoleon” leuk om te rijden. Een dubbele muur met verschillende torens omringt de stad. Met 1.326 meter is Briançon de hoogst gelegen stad van Europa. De stad had vanwege de strategische positie van vlakbij de Frans-Italiaanse grens een belangrijke verdedigingstaak.
