Switzerland has three large landscape areas with the fairly flat Mittelland in the north, the hilly Jura and the Prealps in the west and the Alps in the third. The mountain world in the Alps is majestic and breathtaking, with deep mountain valleys, blue lakes and high mountain peaks.

Versatile Switzerland

The land of the Alpine horn, yodelling, Alpine meadow, shepherd's wrestling and Alpine cheese is very versatile. If you spend the night at one of the campsites in Switzerland, you will immerse yourself in culture, history and nature. Every season, every mountain, every village or town has its own charm and there is plenty to do. In the summer you can enjoy climbing, hiking, cycling, motorcycling and tobogganing in the fresh mountain air throughout the country. From above the mountain you can go down with the Hangglider. Once down at the rivers you can go rafting and canoeing in the water. Some unique attractions are the glaciers and ice caves, such as the highest ice cave in the world in Matterhorn, which offers you a deep look into the world of glaciers. Many cheese dairies are also worth a visit in the Alps, including Gotthard's. Don't forget to bring your hiking boots! Take a special walk around the Vierwaldstättersee lake area and let yourself be enchanted. Enjoy the beautiful view of the gigantic Alps, the beautiful lakes and the historic city of Lucerne.

Winter sports

In winter, people come to the campsites in Switzerland for winter sports, in the usually high-altitude, snow-sure winter sports resorts. In some places you can ski almost all year round. The famous town of St. Moritz has acquired an attractive and stylish character due to its fashion culture and international competitions. It even claims to be the cradle of winter sports. However, Les Quatre Vallées is Switzerland's largest ski area, with no less than 400 kilometers of slopes.

Popular areas

Jura and three lakes country is an ideal destination to pitch your tent. The area extends from Basel to Geneva. Other popular areas, with plenty of campsites, are the beautiful Graubünden and Eastern Switzerland and Lichtenstein. The breathtaking views of mountains, valleys and lakes in this one will leave you in awe. In Ticino in southern Switzerland, on the south side of the Alps, you will find Italian flair, a mild climate and palm trees on clean beaches. Of course in the vicinity of the beautiful Alpine landscapes.

Camping near cities

Switzerland is suitable for any type of camping equipment: the camper, caravan or tent, it doesn't matter. Visit a campsite near Switzerland's cities and discover what this country has to offer.

Geneva

The European headquarters for the United Nations is in Geneva. This city is also the birthplace of the Red Cross. It is beautifully situated between the Alpine peaks and the Jura ridge. The old town center is especially suitable for shopping to your heart's content and for cultural activities, such as a visit to the St-Pierre cathedral and various opera and museums.

Lausanne

Lake Geneva is mainly fed by the Rhône. However, the city of Lausanne, where the Olympic Committee is located, has the most beautiful location on the lake. The medieval city center, built on the hills and surrounded by the Savoy Alps and vineyards, is a real attraction. Don't forget to visit the Olympic Museum as well.

Bern

The historic center of Bern is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Walk through the city and take a good look around you. Sandstone facades, historic towers, market stalls, boutiques, cafes and squares brighten up your view.

Basel

Basel is an old university city and has the highest museum density in the country. The main event is Fasnacht (carnival) and it lasts for three days. A parade of colored masks, clothing and lights passes through the city early in the morning.

Zurich

Zurich is the economic heart of Switzerland. From the city you look out over the snowy Alps and Lake Zurich. Museums, galleries and shops also provide sufficient distraction.

Languages in Switzerland

As a tourist, you can go practically anywhere on the campsites in Switzerland with plain German. However, they speak four official national languages; German, French, Italian and Romansh. The majority of the population speaks German, in the West they mainly speak French and in the South Italian. Around Graubünden, Romansh is spoken. This language is spoken by the least part of the population and there are five other language variants.

Practical information

A valid passport or European identity card is required to visit campsites in Switzerland. Motor vehicle drivers must have a valid driver's license, vehicle registration certificate and green card. If you drive a trailer or a caravan, you must have the papers with you. The import and export of Swiss money is unlimited, certain rules apply to the import of goods. The country is not a member of the EU. The currency is the Swiss franc. At many addresses you can pay with euros, but the change is always in francs.

Traffic around the campsites in Switzerland

The road network is of excellent quality. The roads in the mountains are also very good. Sometimes, however, the roads are necessarily narrow and there are special places to pass the oncoming vehicle. Furthermore, a motorway vignette is mandatory. However, a separate vignette is required for a trailer/caravan. You can buy the vignettes at all Swiss border crossings, at the automobile clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium and at the border exchange offices. The maximum speed in built-up areas is 50 km/h, outside built-up areas 80 km/h and on the Autobahn 120 km/h. A trailer/caravan may not be driven faster than 80 km/h. In the mountains, ascending traffic has priority over descending traffic, except near a fall-back area. In the winter months it is mandatory to use snow chains on the drive wheels. Radar detectors in the car are prohibited. There is a ban on trailers, but this ban does not apply to the caravan.

Roadside assistance

In the event of a breakdown, call TCS: 140 (International Travel and Letter of Credit required). You receive traffic information via radio DRS-1 or telephone number 163 in Switzerland.
