De provincie Hedmark is gelegen ten oosten en noordoosten van Oslo. Ondanks dat er nog geen 200.000 mensen wonen heeft het een enorme oppervlakte, ca. driekwart van Nederland. In het oosten grenst Hedmark aan de Zweedse grens, in het zuiden aan Akershus, in het westen aan Oppland en in het noorden aan Sør Trøndelag. De campings in de Hedmark liggen ruim verspreid door de provincie. En ondanks dat de Hedmark geen kustlijn heeft liggen nagenoeg alle campings aan een meer of rivier.

Hamar en het Mjøsameer

De grootste meren zijn Femunden en het bekende Mjøsameer. Bekend vanwege met name de hoofdplaats van Hedmark: Hamar waar in 1994 de Olympische Winterspelen plaats vonden. In Nederland is Hamar vooral bekend van de schaatssport. Vroeger trainde de Nederlandse schaatsers hier toen er nog geen kunstijsbanen in eigen land beschikbaar waren. De ijsbaan van Hamar ziet er uit als een omgekeerd vikingschip, het Vikingskipet. Hier worden nog regelmatig grote (internationale) wedstrijden gehouden.

Glomma, de grootste rivier van Noorwegen

Voor vissers is de Hedmark ook een bekend gebied, want de grootste rivier van Noorwegen – de Glomma – met een lengte van maar liefst 604km., loopt door Hedmark. Naast vissers trekt de Hedmark veelal natuurliefhebbers, wandelaars, mountainbikers, rustzoekers en wintersportliefhebbers. Want in het oosten van de Hedmark ligt Trysil, 1 van de belangrijkste wintersportgebieden van Noorwegen.
