The Dordogne region consists mostly of limestone plateaus and is located on the western foothills of the Massif Central mountain range. The movements of the earth have created many natural caves with beautiful dripstone formations in the limestone crust. You can visit the caves yourself, this can even be done by boat or train. Rivers in the Dordogne

The many rivers in this region have created valleys with a fertile silt layer. The Dordogne is one of the few rivers in France with a largely natural course. It is also one of the longest rivers in the country.
