One way to reach Ticino (or Tessin as the German-speaking Swiss call it) from the north is to drive through the 17-kilometer Gotthard tunnel. Another option is the much more beautiful Gotthard Pass, parallel to the tunnel. The Nufenenpas (from the west) and the Lukmanierpas (from the east) are not recommended with a caravan. If you come from a completely different direction, the San Bernardino pass is still an option. You will then enter Bellinzona Ticino. Once through the tunnel or over the pass you will find yourself in Italy. The style of houses, churches and other buildings is very similar to the style found in Italy.

The climate in Ticino

Due to its location on the south side of the Alps, there is a favorable, almost Mediterranean, climate in Ticino. Spring can already be nice and warm and sunny and that can continue well into autumn. The summer is usually hot, but cooling can be found in the water. Or go into the mountains, for example by car into the Verzasca valley to the "end point" Sonogno and then continue walking. In short, there is an area with an attractive climate for every camper in Ticino.

Trips are often made during the camping holiday. There are many trips to be made in Ticino, of varying diversity. Well worth a visit is the Isole di Brissago, a subtropical island in Lake Maggiore. From Locarno there is a boat connection with which you can reach this island. Throughout the year there is something cultural going on somewhere in Ticino. There is a good chance that you will encounter one of these cultural activities while camping. Alternating from local markets, flower exhibitions, the Easter procession or Festspiele to many types of music (jazz, rock, pop, organ music, blues) with wine and chestnut festivals in the autumn. Chestnuts have been a source of food for the local population for many generations.
