Rhön Camping-Park is a five-star campsite that has been rated as excellent for years by the ADAC, the German sister of the ANWB. At Rhön Camping-Park all places are supplied with water and electricity. All places are on grass in the well-maintained park. Much room for maneuver for small and larger vehicles. The central building at the reception not only houses excellent sanitary facilities, but there is also a kindergarten room, two TV rooms with comfortable seats, one with pool table. Also a games room with, among other things, table football and some slot machines. But also a sauna and solarium. So a great, comfortable accommodation in case the weather conditions would be a bit disappointing! A special feature is that the environment is very popular with (manned) gliders and enthusiastic model flyers. Ask for "De Wasserkuppe". There is even a job room for model airplane enthusiasts with a workbench and a fountain to keep clean hands! This part of Germany would be the cradle of gliding and is a Mecca for enthusiastic glider pilots. There is a Theme Park Water: a playground for children. Traveling back and forth with a Dragon raft / ferry boat, clambering on a castle-like structure, geological explanation of stone types, etc. Next to a sports field. At the entrance is a nice playground. The beautiful surroundings of the Rhön Nature Park ("Land der offenen Fernen") lends itself perfectly for dozens of hiking routes and (sporting) cycling routes in the grandiose and very varied nature why this region is so famous. A swimming pool is close by. Because you are close to the former border with East Germany you can also see a part of the former Iron Curtain. In Merkers you can visit a salt mine / crystal cave, where at the time the Nazis, for example, kept their gold supplies hidden from the rising Russians and Americans! The area offers many possibilities for excursions. At the reception, the young owners of the campsite will be happy to inform you about this. Among others in the beautiful surroundings of the Rhönpark with its beautiful panoramas and views. But also a visit to the town of Fulda (30 km) with its historic buildings is worthwhile. Or a visit to a border post of the former iron curtain, including an American watchtower that is a remnant from the Cold War.
