Rhône-Alpes is the second largest region in France with Lyon as its capital. The region stretches from the Massif Central in the west to the Alps in the east. It is on the route when you drive from Paris towards the Cote d'Azur. The Rhône-Alpes is located in the southeast of France and borders Italy and Switzerland.

Different areas in the Rhône-Alpes

The Rhône-Alpes is divided into a number of large areas. These areas are well-known camping destinations. There is the Ardeche with its wild landscape, the famous Pont d'Arc. The Drôme with the Parc de Vercors, its excellent climate and its specific wine the Clairette de Die. Isère with Grenoble and the imposing mountain world at its center. The Parc des Ecrins. The Savoie, the real Alpine region with huge forests, rivers and mountain lakes. With Lake Bourget as the largest and deepest lake in France and Lake Aiquebelette where 7 hot springs ensure a water temperature of 28 degrees in summer.

Where the Loire flows through the entire department and where numerous castles can be admired. The department of the Rhône with a landscape characterized by the many vineyards on the sloping slopes. And who does not know the wines of the Côte de Rhône and Beaujolais? The Haute Savoie remains with Lake Geneva on the border with Switzerland and to the south of it the equally famous Lake Annecy. In the direction of Chamonix with the Mont Blanc massif with mountains above 4,800 meters, where a cable car takes you up to the eternal snow.

Lakes in the Rhône-Alpes

The three largest lakes in the Rhône-Alpes are Lake Annecy, Lake Bourget and the French part of Lake Geneva. Lake Annecy is a popular with tourists and many water sports are practiced. Lake Annecy is located in beautiful surroundings, about 50 km from Geneva and in the middle of the Alps. A refreshing dip in the water, relaxing on the grass, boating, hang gliding, walking or cycling and gastronomically enjoying French and Swiss cuisine. What else do you want?!? 

Lake Bourget is only ten kilometers from Chambéry. This is the largest and deepest lake in France. Did you know that Lake Geneva is also partly in France? The lake is right on the border between France and Switzerland. So you can easily make the crossing here for a visit to the Swiss part.

Ideal for active holidays

Due to the hilly landscape, all kinds of active holidays are possible. 
Snow and inviting slopes for skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Several lakes also provide entertainment. How about a refreshing dip in the water, a round of canoeing or exploring the area by boat? The mountains provide a great environment for a long walk or to go out with a mountain bike or bicycle.

Visit the culinary capital of Lyon

When you camp in the Rhône-Alpes, a visit to Lyon is definitely worth it. From the hill Fourvière you have an amazing view over the city. Did you know that the old part of Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Here you will find the imposing town hall, the opera house and the basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Each one certainly worth taking a look. Lyon is known as the French capital of gastronomy. So after a day of culture sniffing, join one of the many restaurants and let yourself be pampered culinary.
