D-Day landing coast

Due to its turbulent past, Normandy has a rich history, the remnants of which are still visible today. The coast above and west of Caen is of historical interest. This is the landing coast of D-Day including Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. When you camp at a campsite nearby, you should definitely visit this area, the impressive history is told here time and again. But history is not only to be found on the coast, the hinterland is all reference to the battle in 1944 with a large number of described and indicated routes (for example Overlord). Ask at the campsite for information and they will certainly be able to help you. One thing is certain, a holiday in Normandy can be a lot more instructive and impressive than a boring history lesson.

Romantic Normandy

Normandy is always beautiful, but in the spring it really is a party. The many apple trees in bloom provide a rural picture, especially when they are located near those beautiful country houses, 'manoirs'. By the sea, the rolling greenery suddenly changes into spectacular white cliffs. Normandy is known for the three c's: camembert, cider, calvados. Shopping here is therefore a feast if you like tasty cheeses and alcoholic drinks that taste like apple. In northern Normandy, the country consists of a huge chalk plateau, the Pays de Caux. On the coast, this creates the beautiful high white cliffs; a chalk coast that is not inferior to the well-known British variant. The most spectacular coast is at Étretat, where the water has carved jagged arches from the soft rock. A favorite subject of painters who set their easels on the beach here in the 19th century. They were the Impressionists of the first hour, artists who could finally work outdoors thanks to the invention of the portable easel, not to mention: paint in tubes. Sounding names like Renoir, Gauguin, Degas and Monet. He once spent a whole winter here, working in the middle of the snow. In six years he painted 150 canvases of the Normandy coast.

Arques–la–Bataille

Embedded in the greenery, Varengeville sur mer is a beautiful small village. It is therefore not surprising that you will also find a beautiful visiting garden here, Le Bois des Moutiers. The design is by the English landscape gardener Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1932), one of the most famous gardeners of her time. The garden is located at a beautiful old country house with tearoom and extends all the way to the cliff coast. A well-known and much-visited site is the huge ruins of the 15th century castle of Arques, in Arques–la–Bataille. Much rougher than the lovely Bois des Moutiers, not much is left of it. But the castle has made its mark. The village is named after the battle that took place here in 1589, when the Protestant Henri IV pushed back an army of 30,000 Catholics with cannons atop the castle walls. An association of volunteers is trying to restore the castle, as it is a beautiful example of military architecture in the Middle Ages.

Bells are ringing in Normandy

A little further from Arques–la–Bataille is another castle: the 16th century Château de Miromesnil. You can buy tickets here in the small, atmospheric souvenir shop. The castle derives some fame from the fact that the famous writer Guy de Maupassant was born there on 5 August 1850. It is an intimate castle and the estate around it is also special. The kitchen garden is still surrounded by a high brick wall. Especially the 16th century chapel Saint–Antoine–l'Ermite, on an avenue in a beautiful old beech forest, makes the visit very special. Enthusiasts can ring the bell here themselves. Beech forests like the one at Château de Miromesnil are typical of the Pays de Caux. Further north you will discover the Forêt d'Eu, a former royal hunting grounds, as can be seen from the old signposts at the crossroads. You look out over the Vallée de l'Yeres and you can walk on winding paths between blue fields full of forest anemones. Do you get hungry from this cultural tour? A piece of fish in a restaurant on the harbor in Le Tréport is an absolute must.
