Camping Kokonniemi lays on a sloping terrain with birch trees. It is a comfortable and friendly small campsite 2 km from the center of the old artists' town Porvoo. Porvoo is one of the oldest cities in Finland. The city lies on the Porvoojoko at 50 km east of Helsinki. Porvoo was an important trading city in the Middle Ages. In 1346, King Magnus Eriksson gave the city the first statute, that is, city law. When entering the city we see a row of red wooden houses with tent roofs and with river piers. These are the former warehouses of colonial goods. The houses now serve as picturesque enclosures. In the old city 'Vanha Porvoo' lies the intimate slightly sloping market square, paved with uneven boulders. It is surrounded by colorful wooden houses. The red wooden town hall built in 1764 has white window frames and a high black roof with an octagonal turret. The historic museum is located in the town hall. It has late baroque house interiors. The yellow-brown house dates from 1762, opposite the town hall. In this house is the Edelfat-Vallgrenmuseum. The Tuomokirkko is high. This beautiful medieval cathedral was built in 1418 and has played an important role in the history of Finland. The first Finnish Reichstag came here in 1809, when Finland came under Russia under Tsar Alexander I. There is a square clock tower at the DOM. The church has whitewashed walls, a style roof with black wooden planks such as 'roof tiles' and a façade with red and white ornaments. On the south bank of the Porvoojoki stand at one place, tables and sinks. Here men and women scrub, rinse and dry their clothes. Good for the social contacts among themselves, a special sight. This is being done in several places in Finland.
