Sotkamo is a friendly village with colorful wooden houses, a beige colored wooden church and a large central square. Kajaani is 36 km from the campsite and was founded by Per Brahe in 1651. The town is located between 2 lakes and is surrounded by forests and was formerly known for its tar trade. The green wooden town hall from 1831 is on the Raadhuisplein in the city center. Engel is the architect of this. On a green hillside stands the gothic church of yellow-brown wood with a separate tower from 1896. The interior is a masterpiece of carpenter's art. The doctor Elias Lönnrot lived in a house on the market square from 1850 - 1854. He made long journeys through Karelia and drew the old poems and sagas from the mouths of the inhabitants, from which he compiled the national Finnish epic "Kalevala".
