About the Basque Country
In the north of Spain lies the autonomous region of the Basque Country, or as the Basques themselves say 'Euzkadi'. The region consists of three provinces: Guipuzcoa, Vizcaya and Álava with the capitals of San Sebastián, Bilbao and Vitoria. The landscape is hilly and very beautiful without being too rough. About a quarter of all inhabitants speak the Basque language in addition to Spanish. A language that cannot be compared with any other.
Visit the Guggenheim Museum in vibrant Bilbao
For years, Bilbao was an industrial city where you would rather not go for a holiday. In recent years, the city has been transformed into a hip, artistic city. How? This was partly due to the arrival of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997. More parks and pedestrian paths have also been created to make the city more livable. The city is bustling again and is popular with students and holidaymakers.
Beach, sea and culture in stately San Sebastian
The city of San Sebastian is a mix of beach, waves, historic buildings and cozy squares. Treat yourself to a hearty cup of coffee or a delicious glass of wine at the Plaza de la Constitución. The main attraction is the city's breathtaking bay. Do you visit the San Sebastian in the summer? Then marvel at the many yachts bobbing in the bay.
Plenty of water sports fun on the Bay of Biscay
The Bay of Biscay stretches from Brittany in northern France to the northern coast of Spain. In Spain, the cities of Bilbao, Santander and San Sebastian are located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. You can sail well on the Bay of Biscay. The immediate vicinity of San Sebastian is a mecca for surfers because of the good wind and waves.
Relax on the lovely beaches
Ready for relaxation? The Basque Country has many wonderful beaches where you can enjoy doing nothing at all. Plop down on your towel and let the Spanish sun warm you. Take a refreshing dip in the sea every now and then.
Enjoy Pintxos and the best wines
We have known for a long time that Spaniards love good food. But do you already know Pintxos? This is a skewer full of delicacies served on baguettes. A kind of tapas. The Pintxos originated in the Basque Country and you can order them almost everywhere. And if you eat something delicious in one of the restaurants, a good glass of wine should not be missing. Taste a delicious wine from the vineyards of Álava. Tasty!
