A cycling trip with short routes along beautiful sights or a longer bike ride: the heart of the Alps is the place for a cycling holiday in Austria.

The wind in your hair, a breeze against your skin and the beautiful nature that always cycles with you. This is the perfect way to discover Austria's rich culture and cuisine: cycling is an adventure for all your senses.

The most beautiful cycling routes in Austria, each with its own charm.....

Whether you cycle quickly or in peace, the route is flat or hilly, you cycle along rivers or in the mountains: in Austria every cycling enthusiast will find what he or she is looking for. Hundreds of kilometers of cycle paths through the most beautiful landscapes and past interesting cities are waiting for you to be discovered.

1- Donauradweg

The Austrian part of the 1200 km long Danube Cycle Route runs from Passau to Vienna and covers 330 km. You cycle on former towpaths. Sometimes you almost forget that you are in Austria, it is so traditionally Dutch. Then you have a view of hills and mountains or you cycle in a kind of Norwegian fjord environment. You can often cycle on the Donauradweg on both sides. Back and forth, back and forth! There are ferries and bridges. And sometimes you can cross through a lock.

2- Drauradweg

A sublime river route, we can't say it any other way. And we're not the only ones. The Drau Cycle Route was the first e-bike route in Europe to receive five stars from the German Cyclists' Union. The route starts at 1,209 meters and descends gently along the southern side of the Alps to Varaždin in Croatia. So also suitable for cyclists without electric drive. The route passes through four countries. Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. The starting point is at the Drei Zinnen in the Dolomites. It can hardly be more beautiful. These are the three most painted and photographed peaks. The Drauradweg then runs through beautiful nature reserves. In Carinthia you cycle through the beautiful Rosental and the historic Jauntal. The cycle route also has a mountain of cultural highlights. Including the spectacular modern art Museum Liaunig in Neuhaus. The Drauradweg is 510 km long, with 7 stages in 4 countries (Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia), 50% is unpaved.

3- Ennsradweg

The Ennsradweg is both a fine river cycle route and a secret tip for nature-loving cyclists. The route starts idyllically at 1,200 meters at the foot of the Niedere Tauer, and passes through the stunningly beautiful Gesäuse and Kalkalpen National Parks. In the Gesäuse National Park, the friendly, quiet Enns turns into a roaring, raging river. As if he's mad that the valley isn't wider. Then he becomes as gentle as before. The route follows the river past mountains and valleys, rushing wild streams, meadows full of daffodils in spring, dreamy villages and historic towns. The Ensradweg passes through no fewer than three provinces: Salzburg, Styria and Ober-Österreich. View of the Dachstein and other impressive mountains!

4- Eurovelo 9

Part of the network of cycling routes through Europe. 434 km with beautiful panoramic views (and the occasional climb). The route runs from Südmähren to Maribor, in Slovenia. The Austrian part runs through Nieder-Österreich, Vienna and Styria: a pampering route along vineyards and wine streets and through historic towns. You pass the Wienerwald thermal region, the Wiener Alps, Styria, with castles, castles and thermal baths. And Vienna! Things are getting greener in the Austrian capital. In the city center the maximum speed is 20 kilometers per hour, for everyone. A city to enjoy slowly. To have a coffee in a famous coffee house, such as the classic Viennese café Sperl or to see Hundertwasser's Kunsthaus. The man who became famous for his colorful buildings in organic shapes.

5- Grosse Kärnten Seenschleife

Just throw your swimwear in the panniers. On the Grosse Kärnten Seenschleife you knit no less than 10 majestically beautiful lakes together, each of which screams for a dive. To top it all off, the 340 km long cycle route – good for 4 to 7 days on the saddle – also runs parallel to the banks of the rivers Drau and Gail. So you often sit on the bike with wet hair; dripping like the caves at the Klopeinersee. The entire tour is well signposted, mostly flat and car-free. Thanks to the shape – two loops that forge a figure eight – you can also easily shorten it. A great place to start is for example Villach, also known as the cycling capital of Carinthia due to its favorable location.

6- Innradweg

520 km, 3 countries, about 10 days of cycling. The Inn Cycle Route is a family-friendly route along a river. Upstream and thus downhill. There is not much climbing on this route. And yet you cycle in the mountains. Along the way you pass literal and figurative highlights. In one day, for example, the beautiful city of Hall, with a charming old center, Wattens with the Swarovski Crystal Worlds and the silver city of Schwaz with its medieval atmosphere. About half of the route runs through Tyrol. The Innradweg is also very suitable for letting children experience the fun of cycling holidays! The route can easily be shortened by traveling a bit by bike and train.

7- Iron Curtain Trail

Whoever wanted to cycle through Europe barely 30 years ago came across an almost endless chain of guard posts, tank ditches, trenches and minefields on the borderline between the communist east and the capitalist west. Although this iron curtain has been lifted, you can still cycle past the monuments of yesteryear. Especially on the Iron Curtain Trail: a 10,400 kilometer long history lesson between the Barents Sea and the Balkans. With 700 kilometers and 18 stages alone, the Austrian route can already be called a tough job. In addition to all the memories from Soviet times, you will also pass unparalleled wine towns and imperial castles in Nieder-Österreich and Burgenland. Nature lovers will also get their money's worth. In places such as the National Park Thayatal it is easy to see why the old border line is now known as the 'Green Belt'.

8- Kitzbüheler Alpen

The area is completely "designed" for it, there are several rental companies of e-bikes and e-mountain bikes, so make use of them. Going into the mountains on an e-mountain bike is an unforgettable experience. You come on the smallest paths and you feel free as a bird. Especially if the area is spectacular and that is the Kitzbüheler Alpen. You always have top views. Anyone who goes cycling on the 1,000 km cycle path in the area is always surrounded by something spectacular. You don't have to climb it yourself, although you can. "Mountain goats" do the Radweg Brixental (cycle route no. 21) in Tyrol: 37 km and many altimeters. A less demanding alternative is the Wilder Kaiser Radweg. The nice thing about an e-mountain bike is that everything is easy to do.

9- Murradweg

The Mur Cycle Route is a river cycle route in the footsteps of medieval peddlers. They moved south along the Mur. The route follows the current through the most diverse landscapes of the Alps. You are here in the green heart of Austria. You cycle through a landscape of hills, mountain meadows, lakes and rivers. The Austrians themselves consider the Murradweg the most beautiful cycling route in their country. That could have to do with the enormous variety you encounter here. The secret of the Murradweg is the variety. So you are in the tranquility of the Lungau, with its remote mountain farms and so you are in the middle of the cosiness of Graz. Graz, the city with a southern flair that is also Austria's culinary capital. The route ends in the wine and spa region at the border triangle Austria-Slovenia-Hungary. In Austria you cycle 370 km from the source in Lungau in Salzburg to Bad Radkersburg in Styria. A light to medium heavy route of less than a week.

10- Neusiedlersee Radweg

125 km relax along the shore of the Neusiedlersee, a steppe lake. The lake has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Along the way you will come across culinary and cultural stops. And beautiful photo opportunities, you cycle along reed belts and pass through the most beautiful historic villages in the Burgenland. The route is mostly flat and therefore suitable for everyone – for children, recreational cyclists and e-bikers. The Neusiedlersee Radweg also takes you to Hungary. In summer you can enjoy yourself on and in the lake. You can cut off part of the route by taking the ferry from Illmitz to Mörbisch. But of course you don't want that. Better idea: cycle the entire route and take the ferry back and forth.

11- Olympiaregion Seefeld

The Winter Olympics have already been held three times in the Tyrolean Seefeld. Not strange. The region, located on a 1,200 meter high mountain plateau, is so nice for outdoor sportsmen to yodel. The mountain air is wonderfully fresh, while the sun rarely fails. It is also a party for cyclists between the beautiful meadows, crystal clear streams and picturesque huts. Around the towns of Seefeld, Leutasch, Mösern, Reith and Scharnitz, no fewer than 31 cycling routes have been mapped out for all levels of difficulty; 10 tough, 13 medium and 8 easy tours. Together they form a spider web of no less than 570 kilometers. E-bike enthusiasts will be completely pampered. There are more than 200 Premium Cube E-bikes for rent and there are a lot of charging points. For example, go wild on the brilliant forest trails of the 27 km long 3-Lakes Round. Or test yourself even more on the steep climbs, sharp bends and grinding gravel roads of the 11-kilometer route between the Gaistal and the Rotmoosalm.

12- Paradiesroute Südburgenland

The Südburgenland, close to the Hungarian border, is a gently sloping region that does not feel very Austrian. You have no three-thousanders here, no deep lakes, no pompous architecture. It is, however, the region of natural, cultural and culinary (including wine!) stop off moments. This paradise route, a 260 km round trip, is all about enjoying yourself. You cycle through three nature parks, through stream and river landscapes, over vineyards and past fortresses and castles. You will also visit Bildein, the border village on the former Iron Curtain. Here you can visit the Grenzerfahrungsweg and the Burgenländisches Schichte(n)haus museum. And feel the muscles being used: there are many spas. The Tatz thermal baths, Bad Tatzmannsdorf, are perfect for a relaxing (mid) day.

13- Salzburg Saalachtal

There is little like cycling in the mountains with an electric mountain bike. Literally and figuratively. One of the best places in Austria to practice this sport is the Salzburger Saalachtal. It is located in the middle of the Pinzgau – between Salzburg, Tyrol and Germany. The area has rugged mountains, beautiful meadows and turbulent water. It is ideal for the whole family – but also downhillers and fans of a little more adrenaline will find what they are looking for here. You will find 480 km of cycling paths in the mountains and along the water. The infrastructure has been adapted accordingly. There are e-mountain bikes for rent at 100 rental points and there are 24 charging stations.

14- Salzkammergut Bergeseen E-Trail

In the Salzkammergut there are quite a few finely serrated bread knife mountains. As a cyclist you can use a helping hand on such erratic terrain. That is why the Salzkammergut Bergseen E-trail has been rolled out; a brand new cycling route specially designed for electronic mountain bikes. In total you can pedal more than 630 kilometers between the start around the Attersee and the finish at the Mondsee. But the tour can also easily be broken down into ten day stages, varying from 40 to 80 kilometers each. Sometimes you have to stomp a bit steeply up. A little later you'll be swinging on your fat tires again on grandiose gravel paths or through lush forests. But wherever you drive; the beautiful panoramas are never far away.

15- Salzkammergut Radweg

The Salzkammergut is a region for nature lovers. They come from far and wide to the lakes, meadows and forests. For walking, but increasingly also for cycling. That is because of the Salzkammergut Radweg. A tour from Salzburg with lots of nature. The Salzkammergut cycle route is largely flat, runs through Oberösterreich, Salzburg and Styria and ties together highlight to highlight. The route starts in Salzburg city. Via St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang and the imperial city of Bad Ischl you cycle to Hallstatt and the lake of the same name. Another beautiful piece of World Heritage! And so beautiful that the Chinese copied the entire town. But this is the original. The route is 345 km long and passes no fewer than thirteen lakes.

16- Tauernradweg

The topper among the long-distance cycling routes is the 310 km long Tauernradweg. The long cycle route from Krimml (Austria) to Passau (Germany). You cycle between the peaks of the Alps, but climbing is a side issue on this route. The Tauern Radweg does not have the burdens, but the benefits of a mountain route. In total you descend 750 meters between start and finish. The scenery on this route is the great wonder. The peaks of the High Tauern and the Tennen Mountains rise around you, next to you flow the rivers Salzach, Saalach and Inn. The peaks are the backdrop on this route. And see how wonderful the Hohe Tauern National Park is in the largest protected area in the Alps. On a clear day you can see a forest of mountain peaks around Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner (3798 meters).

17- Weinland Styria Radtour

A 402 km tour through a wine region with bustling cities. That is the Weinland Styria cycle route. A journey that you can start wherever you want. But if you come by train and thus keep your entire holiday CO2-neutral, then Graz is the ideal starting and finishing point. Only downside: it's a city you don't want to leave. Graz is the capital of Styria, and a city where traditional and modern meet. And also a City of Design and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. So definitely stay for a while. But not forever. You don't want to miss the surrounding country either. You cycle leisurely through wine-growing areas and apple orchards and encounter fortresses and castles, wine shops and pumpkin seed oil mills. The route also passes through two nature parks: Pöllauer Tal and Südsteiermark.
