Wij willen u graag wat meer informatie verschaffen over de Åland eilanden en de campings die u op deze eilanden in Finland kunt aantreffen.Op de Åland eilanden zal men geen super- of megacampings vinden. De aanwezige campings zijn in het algemeen mooi gesitueerd en verdienen de kwalificatie doelmatig of comfortabel. Ook de eenvoudigste campings hebben goede basisvoorzieningen en veel ruimte, zowel voor campers en caravans als voor tenten. Veel campings hebben een restaurant/eetcafé, terwijl ze allemaal een sauna (bastu) hebben. Ook een boothelling of steiger (brygga) is dikwijls aanwezig. Op alle campings zijn huuraccommodaties beschikbaar, variërend van eenvoudig tot zeer luxe.
De geografie van de Åland eilanden
De Åland eilanden vormen een archipel tussen de Zuidwest kust van Finland en het Zweedse vasteland. Zij zijn de scheiding tussen de Oostzee en de Botnische golf en hebben door de eeuwen heen een belangrijke strategische functie gehad. De archipel bestaat uit meer dan zesduizend eilanden waarvan er ca. 80 bewoond worden. Het verreweg grootste eiland wordt Fasta Åland genoemd, dit vindt men kennelijk het vaste land van de archipel. Een aantal van de grootste eilanden en schiereilanden zijn door bruggen met elkaar verbonden, de rest van de belangrijkste bewoonde eilanden is bereikbaar met veerboten.Er wonen ruim 25.000 mensen op Åland, waarvan 11.000 in de hoofdstad Mariehamn. De belangrijkste bronnen van inkomsten zijn visserij, scheepsbouw, bos- en landbouw, handel en toerisme.
De staatkundige status van Åland
Åland hoort staatkundig bij Finland, de bewoners zijn dus officieel Finnen, al spreekt meer dan 95% Zweeds en is dit ook de officiële voertaal. De aansluiting van Åland bij Finland was dan ook nogal controversieel en zeker niet met instemming van de bevolking. Toen Finland in 1917 zelfstandig werd (na eeuwenlang afwisselend onder Zweeds en Russisch bestuur gestaan te hebben) werd uiteindelijk in 1921 door de nog niet zolang bestaande Volkerenbond de archipel aan Finland toegewezen met een aantal internationale garanties, o.a. dat het gebied gedemilitariseerd zou blijven. Na de eeuwenlange strijd op en om de eilanden tussen Zweden en Rusland, waarmee ook de Engelsen en Fransen zich tijdens de Krimoorlog nog hadden bemoeid moet dit toch wel een prettig idee voor de bewoners zijn geweest, al waren ze liever aan Zweden toegewezen.
